Early Years Assessment Centres (ABC)
Who receives this service?
The Early Years Assessment Centres (ABC) Service is a service provided by the LEA for school Nursery class age children (3-4 years old). It is a service for individuals who are likely to have who have additional needs.
The ABC class gives an opportunity for Nursery age children to be observed and assessed to make sure that they will have the best provision to develop their skills for the future.
The ABC service provides Observation and Assessment in the Early Years.
What does the service offer?
- Work with small groups of children at a time.
- Introduce a small group of children with Additional Learning Needs to a classroom situation. Prepare the child for full-time education.
- Specialist staff who have specialized in a range of needs, and have specialized in assessing and encouraging children's skills through the Foundation Phase: language, play, self care, physical and social skills
- Early intervention to give the best opportunities and experieinces to the children, as early as possible
- Specialist assistance and support.
- An opportunity to observe and assess a child’s requirements so as to ensure that everything is in place for the child during transition to full-time education.
- Provide opportunities for a child to pursue his/her interests, use learning through play methods and participate in the Foundation Phase as well as understand and follow classroom arrangements.
- Provide every pupil with an opportunity to develop at his/her own level. For instance, ABC staff support Parents when working on toileting and nappy changing.
- Prepare and follow specific programmes for early skills development e.g. toileting, play and socializing skills.
- Use multimedia communication methods e.g. signing, pictures, symbols.
What age to children attend the ABC class?
Nursery class aged pupils attend ABC i.e. the school year when the children reach their 4th birthday.
Pupils receive part-time education in the Nursery year.
The ABC service counts as teaching hours equating to that in a school. Pupils either attend the Unit for 4/5 half day sessions (Dwyfor and Meirionydd are open for 4 sessions only) or share a location with the Mainstream School. This follows discussion between the Parent, ABC Teacher and the LEA. Each child is individual and therefore there are no definite rules in place for the length of time the children attend the ABC class, this will be constantly reviewed. Opening times for all ABC classes vary.

How can the service be accessed?
Children are referred to the service by
- Health Workers such as Community Paediatrician, Health Visitors, Speech and Language Therapists.
- Education Workers working with Cylchoedd Meithrin, Nursery Class Teachers.
Please refer as early as possible so that arrangements can be made in good time.
What is the the Educational Psychologist’s role?
Different Educational Psychologists work with the various ABC Classes.
There is close collaboration with an Educational Psychologist. They attend the ABC class to get to know the children and contribute towards the Individual Development Plan (IDP) meetings.

What is the school’s role?
There is a close link between the ABC service and the pupil’s School so as to ensure a smooth transition to full-time education.
The school can visit the ABC class and attend Individual Development Plan meetings (IDP) or a One Page Profile meeting.
The school and ABC class gather information about the pupil’s development to contribute to meetings with parents.
Who else can help?
There is close contact between the ABC Teacher and Speech and Language Therapists so as to ensure that every child is set targets.
There is close contact between the ABC Teacher and agencies who work with the child and their families e.g. DERWEN, IMPACT Team.
What can you do at home?
Regular contact with the ABC Teacher is very important to make sure everybody takes the same course of action e.g. work on the same targets such as toileting etc.
ABC classes use a diary or Classdojo app to keep contact with parents. The diary’s purpose is to
- Log some of the activities that the child has enjoyed during the week.
- Note any important development.
- Note what works
- Note what does not work.
- Pictures are also placed in the diary.
Parents are encouraged to write in the book e.g. note important things about their child e.g. mention if the child has not slept the previous evening etc.
The parents are asked to note in the diary whether they have a new telephone number.
Other ABC classes use the 'Classdojo' App for contacting parents. Parents will be able to register to App Classdojo e.g. share messages, videos, pictures, targets etc. from the class teacher
Parents are asked to notify the staff if an individual other than usual, collects their child from class.
If for whatever reason, the child is absent from class, the parent should contact the taxi firm to notify that a taxi is not required that day. This saves time and expense. The parents are also asked to notify the ABC class as soon as possible.
Does the ABC class have a school uniform?
Those attending the ABC class fo not have to wear school uniform. Some parents opt to purchase their local school’s uniform and other parents dress their children in clothes they wear at home. This is an individual choice.
Does anything have to be brought to the ABC class?
Parents are requested to provide a snack for their child to bring to class.
Parents are asked to provide suitable clothing for the weather conditions e.g. a coat in winter.
The child should have a sufficient number of nappies/wipes and spare clothing in their bag every day.
Parents are asked to place a label on their child’s belongings e.g. bag, coat, drinks bottle etc.
The LEA can arrange a taxi for children who reside further away than 2 miles from the ABC class (in accordance with the Education Department's Transport Policy). The taxi transports the children to the class and then brings them home at the end of each session.
All parents do not wish to use taxi transport. Some prefer to bring their child to school themselves.
